A BBC Report explains possible reasons why more women cyclists are killed by ‘heavy goods vehicle’ (or ‘lorries’) in the United Kingdom.
This year, seven of the eight people killed by lorries in London have been women. Considering that women make only 28% of the UK’s cycling journeys, this seems extremely high.
The report suggests that the increased compliance among women cyclists willing to wait at red lights puts them at greater risk of being hit by a heavy goods vehicle as it turns left. Your mother never told you running a red light on your bike might save your life.
The good news is overall deaths among cyclists is down. “The number of cyclists killed in Britain has fallen by 27% compared with the mid-1990s. Last year, 115 cyclists were killed on the roads, a 15% fall from 136 deaths in 2007.
