Diverging Diamond Interchange: Brilliant or Bizarre?

A unique highway interchange called the Diverging Diamond Interchange is currently attracting interest in the United States with a host of new projects under consideration. The only current examples of this exist in France and one instance in Missouri.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is currently constructing a new interstate interchange with a Diverging Diamond and this expensive animation shows the counter-intuitive interchange in action.

This is either brilliant or bizarre–I can’t decide which at this point.

To make matters worse, one of these interchanges in France has been further altered.

  1. Troubleshooter says:

That interchange in France was not altered. The original design for it was configured to use the existing three bridges from an earlier diamond interchange (the center bridge had the left turn lanes).
